Fire Safety Compliance Inspections

The Colchester Fire Marshal’s Office conducts annual inspections to check for compliance with the Connecticut Fire Safety Code and the Connecticut Fire Prevention Code. The following is a list of some of the code requirements that are looked for during a fire safety inspection:

Emergency Lights

  • Emergency lighting is required to illuminate exit paths during a power failure.
  • Monthly testing/documentation are required of the property owner/tenant.

Exit Signs

  • Exit signs must be illuminated at all times, including power failures.
  • Monthly testing/documentation are required of the property owner/tenant.

Exits

  • All exits, including exit corridors and aisles, are to be kept clear of obstructions at all times
  • All exit doors are to remain unlocked while the building is occupied
  • All exit doors shall be free of deadbolts, slide bolts, and padlocks.

Fire Extinguishers

  • Fire extinguishers must be readily visible and mounted in an accessible location.
  • Monthly inspection and annual service are required along with documentation.

Fire Alarm Systems

  • All fire alarm systems shall be inspected and tested annually per NFPA 72
  • Records shall be available for review.

Automatic Sprinklers

  • All sprinkler systems shall be inspected and tested annually per NFPA 25 requirements.
  • Records shall be available for review.
  • 18” clearance shall be maintained around all sprinkler heads

Extension Cords

  • Extension cords may not be used as a substitute for permanent wiring.
  • They shall not be run through walls, ceilings or attached to building surfaces.

Electrical Panels

  • 36” clearance shall be maintained to provide access.
  • All circuits must be labeled
  • Missing and unused circuits shall be covered with a blank cover

Food and Cooking Establishments

  • Must have documentation of semi-annual hood and duct cleaning per NFPA 96.
  • Must have documentation that fire suppression system has been tested and serviced in accordance with NFPA 17 & 17A.
