First Selectman's Report: 1/9 – 1/13

1. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

Date/Time: Saturday, January 21st from 11 AM to 12 PM

Location: Cragin Memorial Library

Let us take inspiration from his life by reading excerpts from Dr. King’s speeches and writings. The event will be hosted by the First Selectman, the CORE Commission, and Cragin Memorial Library.

2. A Very Special Birthday Announcement!!

On Friday, October 13th the Town of Colchester will be celebrating its 325th Birthday!!! Tiffany Quinn, our Park & Recreation Director, and I are preparing an event with many surprises!! Please mark your calendars. More details will follow as we move closer to the event

3. Yesterday, the Town had conversations with the State of Connecticut DOT to expedite State project 0172-0495 which consists of installation of RRFBs (Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons) at various State Road Crosswalk locations throughout the State. The project includes three locations in Colchester as follows:

Route 85 (South Main Street) near Pierce Lane

Route 149 (Westchester Road) near Airline State Park Trail

Route 616 (Norwich Colchester Turnpike) at the Bacon Academy

The project will resume in April of 2023 and the work on the Three Colchester locations is anticipated to be completed soon after.

4. Community CPR & Stop the Bleed

The Colchester Fire Department is offering 2 classes in CPR/AED to the citizens of Colchester this month. These sessions will also include STOP the Bleed training. Classes are FREE.

5. C3 Offers People Empowering People Program

The Collaborative for Colchester's Children, C3, will be offering UCONN's People Empowering People program, on Wednesday mornings beginning on January 18-March 22. This free 10-week course is an innovative personal and family development program with a strong community focus, which is designed to build on the unique strengths and life experiences of the participants by engaging in profound discussion and self-discovery. PEP emphasizes the connection between individual and community action. The class will take place at Bacon Academy and free childcare is available for participants. 6. Free COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic

Location: Colchester Town Hall (127 Norwich Ave) in Meeting Room 1

Time & Date: 9 AM – 2 PM on 1/30

Details: No Appointment Needed – Ages 12 years and older

FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS OFFERED ON-SITE

Identify your risks of chronic disease

And take steps to improve your health

Please bring a health insurance card and photo ID if you have them, but it is not necessary to have health insurance or ID to receive the vaccine. No one will be turned away for lack of insurance or ID.

7. Colchester Commission on Aging Educational Programming Survey

The Commission on Aging is in the process of planning educational programming for 2023 and would like your feedback on several topics. The survey is live and will extend until January 14th.

The Commission on Aging shall assist and support the needs of citizens 55 and older in the areas of nutrition, employment, economic, and physical well-being, social services, housing, and any other areas of concern; develop and implement programs; advocate for this population and collaborate with the Colchester Senior Center and the community.
