First Selectman’s Report: 5/30 - 6/2

Referendum

1. The town-wide Annual Budget Referendum for the Town Budget and Education Budget will be held on Tuesday, June 13th at the Colchester Town Hall from 6 AM – 8 PM.

2. The Board of Selectmen unanimously awarded the contract for the Fire Headquarters parking lot located at 52 Old Hartford Road to B&W Paving and Landscaping in the amount of $200,000 in ARPA Funds and allowed the First Selectman to sign all necessary documents. The documents were signed today.

3. The Board of Selectmen approved of establishing a Public Safety Working Group. A Town Meeting to formalize the group will be held on Thursday, June 15th at 6:30 PM at Town Hall. The group has the endorsement of the Fire Department, Emergency Management Department, and Police Department. The purpose of the group is to strengthen collaboration with the community, gather feedback & provide potential recommendations, increase transparency, and make public commendations.

4. The Board of Selectmen unanimously approved of the Colchester Youth Service’s Youth First Coalition as the official task force for the management of opioid settlement funds.

5. The date of the Sewer & Water Public Hearing has yet to be announced. When a date becomes available, the Town will let the public know.

6. June is known as Pride Month which is an annual celebration that recognizes the contributions of LGBT Americans to the United States and their struggle for equality. The month of June was chosen to commemorate NYC’s Stonewall Uprising of 1969 for equality. The Town of Colchester recognizes this.

In June 1999, President Bill Clinton began the formal recognition of Pride Month. It has since been recognized by Presidents Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. The CORE Commission will be celebrating Pride Month on June 11th by hosting a table at the 43rd Annual Tag Sale on the Green.

7. The Friends of Cragin Memorial Library Book and Bake Sale will begin on Friday, June 2nd and extend until June 7th. Please consider stopping by!

8. The repaving of Rt. 16 is tentatively scheduled to begin in August.

9. The Colchester School Readiness Program is offering grant-subsidized quality preschool for the 2023-2024 school year. The program is perfect for children who are residents of Colchester families, want a 5-day-a-week program, and may find it challenging to pay for preschool. 10. The Commission on Aging will be hosting Aging in Place: A Community Vendor Fair. The event will take place at Cragin Memorial Library on June 14th from 4 pm to 7 pm. Representatives from several agencies that provide equipment, services, and companionship to help you or a loved remain in their home safely and comfortably.
