Why Developmental Assets

The 40 Developmental Assets
The Search Institute has identifed 40 Developmental Assets® that are research based positive qualities that young people need to thrive. The Developmental Assets influence a young person's development; helping them become caring, responsible and productive adults.

Half of the assets focus on the relationships and opportunities young people need in their families, schools and communities. These are the External Assets. The other half of the assets focus on the social-emotional strengths, values and committments that are nurtured within young people. These are known as the Internal Assets.

Why They Are Important
Over the past 25 years, Search Institute has surveyed over 6 million youth across many communities in the United States and around the world. Assets matter for young people from all backgrounds. Regardless of gender, ethnic or cultral heritage, economic situation, sexual orientation, or geographic location, these assets promote positive behaviors and attitudes and help protect young people from many different problem behaviors.
