Community Service

Colchester Youth Services is proud to offer a variety of programs that not only help students improve the world around them, but at the same time help them reap many personal benefits. Studies show that by participating in community service programs youth gain a better understanding of others, increase their self-esteem, and are 50% less likely to abuse alcohol, cigarettes, become pregnant or engage in other destructive behaviors. Also, students who have a strong commitment to volunteerism and community service are known to make the best workers and most dedicated students. When young people learn to serve others they become empowered and grow up knowing that they can make a difference in the world. Whether you are looking for a chance to do a good deed or need to complete community service hours, we have just the program for you. We provide many opportunities for service including: Teens in Action, Youth Action Council for grades 9-12, and Youth Force Group for grades 6-8.

Teens in Action

Teens in Action is a service learning program with the goal of having teens take pride in their community and acknowledging the things that they can do to make change in the world around them. Colchester Youth Services provides several different activities throughout the school year and during school breaks. One of our ongoing projects is taking care of the Colchester Food Bank, which serves residents right here in our own town. Each Tuesday during the school year, we will have students come to the Town Hall after school from 2:30-3:30 to help stock the shelves, clean, and organize the space so that it is ready for shopping days. Students will sign up with the commitment of attending each Tuesday during a 2 month period, starting in September and continuing throughout the school year.

Youth Action Council

An after school group that gives high schoolers the opportunity to become leaders in helping their community. Teens will create and participate in projects that they choose and to help whatever causes that they are passionate about. Youth Action Council is looking for some new members that are kind, motivated, and creative. If you like to help others, are willing to work hard, have a lot of ideas, and are willing to think outside of the box, then this is the place for you!  Y.A.C. meets most Tuesdays after school from 2:15- 3:30pm for the duration of the school year. Most meetings are held at the Youth Center and transportation is provided from Bacon Academy.

Youth Force Group

Youth Force Group allows middle school students to be part of a group that works together to help others in Colchester and surrounding communities. Some of Youth Force Group’s previous projects include a pet food drive and a trip to the Humane Society, helping in the Colchester Food Bank, activities in partnership with the Colchester Senior Center and more. If you are a student leader who is passionate about your community, join us! The Spring session will begin January 28th and continue until June 9th. Meetings will occur every Tuesday after school from 2:15- 4:00pm at the Youth Center. The members will be asked to walk down to the Youth Center after school, just as you would for Open Youth Center. Regular attendance is required. Please fill out an application, found here, and return to Hannah Knight in the Youth Services Office (Town Hall, Suite 205) or email hknight@colchesterct.gov by Thursday, January 16, 2020.
