During the treatment plant improvement project construction, the Town Water Department is operating on a single high-yield well and a second lower-yield well.~ Until the primary wells become fully functional, the Department has issued a Voluntary Conservation Notice. A voluntary conservation notice does not preclude people from using water outdoors or indoors. It does, however, request people to be aware of how they use water and to conserve whenever possible and practical.
Some opportunities to conserve are little more than being smart about water use. Because outdoor water use represents the greatest difference in water consumption throughout the year, it also provides the greatest opportunity to conserve. Watering lawns and gardens is most effective and efficient when done early in the morning and later in the evening when temperatures are cooler. It also does not have to be done every day. Therefore, the Department requests people to limit their lawn and garden watering to the hours of 7 to 9 a.m. or 7 to 9 p.m. only. Pool filling or topping off should be done only on weekday nights.
To further control water use, other activities such as the Town Spray Park will remain on a shortened schedule until the restrictions are lifted. The Town Spray Park uses a recapture/recirculation system that limits the amount of make-up water required. However, during the hotter times of the day, significant evaporation occurs. Sale of pool water by the Town is also limited to only such times as specifically authorized by the Department after a review of operating conditions.
Restrictions will remain in place until further notice. Please visit www.colchesterct.gov for updates. Also, please review “Water Efficiency Measures for Residents” available on the Town web site.
