The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring thousands of people in the area to conduct door-to-door interviews as part of Census 2010, beginning this spring. These are “enumerator” or census taker jobs. They are temporary (possibly as long as 8 weeks) and part-time jobs, and most work will be conducted early evenings and weekends when people are home to be interviewed.
Training and mileage are paid. There also will be some office and supervisory positions filled. Pay ranges from $16 an hour (enumerators) to $21 an hour (supervisors).
In order to be eligible for one of these jobs, you must take the basic skills test. Locally, tests will be held at the Cragin Memorial Library, but you can take this test in any town.
You must call the toll-free number 1-866-861-2010 to schedule a test. You must also bring appropriate ID with you to the test. Veterans may also apply for 5- and 10-point preference.
(It is highly recommended that you take the practice test.)
