Q: When should I expect my tax bill?
A: Tax bills will be mailed on or before July 1, the due date. By state law, failure to receive a tax bill does not exempt you from paying taxes or interest payments. If you do not receive a tax bill, contact the Tax Collector's office and find out why.
Q: How much interest is accrued?
A: 1 ½% per month, 18% per year.
Q: How many times a year do you bill?
A: Once a year for motor vehicle unless you have a supplemental or partial bill because you bought a new vehicle or transferred plates during the year. Real estate will be billed once with two (2) coupons for each installment.
Q: Why are you charging me for tax information I need to file my income taxes?
A: This is duplicate information that was already provided to you when the original bill went out.
Q: Can I make partial payments if I can’t pay the bill in full?
A: Yes. We do not have payment plans, but you can make partial payments. On the first of the month, interest will be applied to whatever balance there is.
Q: Am I still responsible for the bill even if I don’t receive it?
A: Yes. The statute places the responsibility on the taxpayer. The tax office makes every attempt to get the bill to the taxpayer. CT State Statute Section 12-130 states “Failure to send out any such bill or statement shall not invalidate the tax”.
