Why the “57 Fest?”

Colchester community members have long known what CNN/Money Magazine officially recognized in 2005:  Colchester is a fantastic place to live, work, play, and grow.  In its July 2005 issue, the magazine ranked Colchester as the 57th best place to live in the country.  As community events and activities are no small part of what makes Colchester such a great town, what could be a more fitting way to celebrate this national honor than with a family festival?

However, the event is meant not only to celebrate Colchester’s recognition; it also strives to encourage the community to live healthy and active lifestyles, in conjunction with the Town’s national designation as a “Step Up To Health” community by the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA).  In 2007, this event itself was honored, as the Governor’s Committee on Physical Fitness selected it as the best event in Connecticut to focus on health and wellness.

As the event continues to grow and develop, the 2013 “57 Fest” will be a celebration of healthy, active living; conserving our environment; and reconnecting with nature.  You will find many activities along these lines throughout this year’s festival.

We welcome one and all to spend the day at the park enjoying all it has to offer, including special activities and shows planned for that day, as well as the year round facilities, such as the playgrounds, sports facilities, skate park and more!

The 1-mile is a classic race distance that is rarely run nowadays (has been "replaced" with the 1500 and 1600 meters.) Younger kids that don't want to run a mile can run a 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile. Males, females & adults & Seniors are encouraged to participate! Registration is from 3:30 to 4:00 p.m.~ Races will begin promptly at 4 p.m. Parents wishing to run with their children can do so.~ There are no prizes, no awards, just races for the competitive fun.

Our goal is to have at least "57" or more runners of all ages participate.~ Please contact Don Levine at

In a box highlighted: Glow Necklaces for sale at both Information Booths – R1 & R5 to the left of the Main Stage. Help support the fireworks by purchasing glow necklaces. $2.00 each or 3 for $5.

Show Us Your 57!

Do you have 57 hats? Is your street address 57? Do you own a 57 Chevy?
Are you 57 years old? Can you do 57 jumping jacks?
Colchester Parks & Recreation and WJJMS Students & volunteers want you to show them your “57”! WJJMS students & volunteers will be on hand at the “Show Us Your 57!” booth at this year’s Colchester 57 Fest, and they can not wait to see just how creative the community will be. Each person that stops at the booth and demonstrates their “57” will earn an official “57” temporary tattoo, as well as be entered into a drawing for great prizes.

Fire in the Sky!

At 8:00pm, the skies over the Recreation Complex will be ablaze with a spectacular display produced by Zambelli Fireworks Exclusively Sponsored by Rockville Bank Foundation. With their extensive experience in special effects as well as fireworks, this promises to be a show to remember!

With the flat, wide-open layout of the Recreation Complex, there is truly no bad seat in the house. The display will be shot from the rear of the park, meaning that R5, R6 & R7 will be closed off for safety; however, the rest of the park will be open. The best viewing areas will be any of the open ball fields, R1, R2 and R3.

Remote Control Car Racing

Imagine racing your favorite Winston Cup stock car on a banked oval speedway at scale speeds up to 200mph! You're in complete control as you head into the high speed banked curve, your left hand gripping the full-size steering wheel, your right hand on the shifter, your heart pounding as you go into turn 3 with the throttle wide open.~All of a sudden, it happens—the car behind you taps you from behind as he tries to nose you to the inside, sending your car spinning up the track, out of control, and into the wall as another car t-bones you when you slide in front of him. No Worries! You may be a lap down, but you're not out. Just shift into reverse and you're back in the action!

Take part in this FREE exhilarating fun at the Big Daddy’s Racing booth on the Midway all evening!

Obstacle Course Packs a Powerful Punch!
Have fun navigating through this packed inflated obstacle course before climbing to the top of a 15' rock wall than slide down the~inflated slide to the bottom to finish the course. Each 64' lane run guarantees a heart pumping and super fun inflatable experience!

Thank You To Our Sponsors and Committee Members!

No event this big happens without a lot of help, and the "57 Fest" is no exception.

Prior to the 2005 event, Colchester had not seen fireworks since 1998, when it celebrated its Tercentennial. Several local businesses and organizations, however, have committed their support and partnership to ensure that the town can properly celebrate what the community has already known for many years: Colchester is a fantastic place to live, work, play, and grow.

Rockville Bank Foundation is the Exclusive Fireworks Sponsor. The Presenting Sponsors are S&S Worldwide and Colchester Business Association. The Wellness Tent co- sponsors are Children’s Family Dental and Backus Hospital and the Concert Sponsor is Family Physical Therapy.

The Colchester Reminder newspaper is the official Media Sponsors of the event, producing our print advertising.

Additional businesses have contributed as Supporting Sponsors, including Willimantic Waste, Subway, Dr. Steve C. Lakes, Gallicchio Builders LLC, Casey Chiropractic, Solo Mechanical,  United Rentals, Big Mama’s Inflatables & Sign Professionals.

With community support like this, it is no wonder that the Coordinating Committee is so excited to put on a first-class event each year. The committee consisted of staff from many town departments, as well as the Colchester Public Schools.

Thank you to one and all who contributed to this year's "57 Fest!"
