Why the “57 Fest?”

Colchester community members have long known what CNN/Money Magazine officially recognized in 2005:  Colchester is a fantastic place to live, work, play, and grow.  In its July 2005 issue, the magazine ranked Colchester as the 57th best place to live in the country.  As community events and activities are no small part of what makes Colchester such a great town, what could be a more fitting way to celebrate this national honor than with a family festival?

However, the event is meant not only to celebrate Colchester’s recognition; it also strives to encourage the community to live healthy and active lifestyles, in conjunction with the Town’s national designation as a “Step Up To Health” community by the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA).  In that spirit, the event is sticking to its roots and taking it to the next level, with an expanded focus on health and wellness.  Be sure to stop by the “Wellness Tent” on the Midway.

We welcome one and all to spend the day at the park enjoying all it has to offer, including special activities and shows planned for that day, as well as the year round facilities, such as the playgrounds, sports facilities, skatepark and more!

Rain Cancellation

To find out if the event has been cancelled due to poor weather, you may visit the town web site (www.colchesterct.gov) or call the Parks & Recreation Office: 537-7297.  Additionally, an email will go out on the Parks & Recreation Announcement List – to subscribe to the list, visit the Parks & Recreation page of the town web site.

Parking & Shuttles

With the large turnout expected for the event, the town has developed a parking and transportation plan to ensure all attendees have convenient and safe places to park for the festival.

Attendees are encouraged to park in one of the designated shuttle lots, which will be served by FREE continuously looping shuttles throughout the day, continuing until well after the completion of the fireworks.

Shuttle Lots:
Jack Jackter Intermediate School (Halls Hill Road)
St. Andrews Church (Norwich Avenue)
Lake Hayward Road Commuter Lot (Routes 2 & 11 – Exit 19)

Limited parking will be available at the Recreation Complex on Old Hebron Road:  by the Concession Stand, as well as at the Annex, by the tennis courts.

Handicapped parking will be available in the “north lot” of the Recreation Complex, by the Pavilion, directly across from the golf course entrance.

Street parking will be available along one side of the street on both Old Hebron Road and Stollman Road.  Please obey posted parking restrictions.

Significant parking will also be available along Old Hartford Road, including the Commuter Lot by the Colchester Highway Department, and at Valvoline Express Care/Performance Tire.  Access to the park from these locations is through the R8 field (behind the Commuter Lot) and up a short stairway.

FEATURED CONCERT on the Liberty Bank Stage:
“Blues Patrol”
6-8pm

For the fifth year in a row, Liberty Bank will be the Exclusive Sponsor of the Featured Concert, which will feature “Blues Patrol”.  You'll feel like Jake and Elwood have jumped off the screen and onto our stage as this Blues Brothers show brings everyone's favorite songs and characters to life.

As always, Liberty Bank will be on hand to lend a fun flare to the event.

William W. Backus Hospital Wellness Tent

An important focus of the festival is introducing the community to the many opportunities and alternatives for enjoying a healthy and active life.  To help expand this feature of the event, The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich returns this year as the Exclusive Sponsor of the Wellness Tent.

Details TBD

Community Wildlife Habitat Recognition Ceremony
5:45pm on the Liberty Bank Stage

When Colchester was certified earlier this year as the first community in Connecticut, and only the 36th in the country, to achieve Community certification by the National Wildlife Federation, it was due in no small part to the large number of residents who took the initiative to have their properties reviewed and designated as official wildlife habitats.  To date, more than 120 homes, along with numerous parks, schools and business properties have been certified, and more are added each month.

A Community Wildlife Habitat is one that provides habitat for wildlife throughout the community—in individual backyards, on school grounds, businesses, places of worship, farms and in public areas such as parks, and community gardens. It is a place where the residents make it a priority to provide habitat for wildlife by providing the four basic elements that all wildlife need: food, water, cover and places to raise young.  The community also educates its residents about sustainable gardening practices such as reducing or eliminating chemical fertilizers and pesticides, conserving water, planting native plants, removing invasive plants and composting.

Join us for a short ceremony as we recognize the commitment made by our many homeowners in attendance, view the entries and winners of the CWH photo contest, and learn more about the effort and the ongoing process at the Colchester Wildlife Habitat Committee tent.

Farmers Market

Visit the Colchester Farmers Market on R2 throughout the festival and take home fresh, local fruits, vegetables, cheeses and more.

Farmers markets symbolize much of what the “57 Fest” is about:  good nutrition, through healthy eating; conserving nature, buy buying locally and reducing the associated carbon footprint; and reconnecting with nature by learning more about where our food supply comes from.

Win-Win Start to the Day

Start the day off with a healthy activity and support great charities at the same time!

The St. Andrew Choir is hosting their 2nd Annual 5k Rhythm Run and Tag Sale at 9:00am on Saturday, with proceeds supporting the Colchester Food and Fuel Banks, along with the choir.  For more information or to register, visit the web site at www.5krhythmrun.webs.com .

Show Us Your 57!

Do you have 57 hats?  Is your street address 57?  Do you own a 57 Chevy?  Are you 57 years old?  Can you do 57 jumping jacks?  Colchester Parks & Recreation and the Colchester Senior Center want you to show them your “57”!

Senior Center Staff and volunteers will be on hand at the “Show Us Your 57!” booth at this year’s Colchester 57 Fest, and they can not wait to see just how creative the community will be.  Each person that stops at the booth and demonstrates their “57” will earn an official “57” temporary tattoo, as well as be entered into a drawing for great prizes.

Friendly Family Competitions

Throughout the day, families will have a number of opportunities to show off their teamwork by taking on other families in fun competitions.

Fire in the Sky!

At 8:00pm, the skies over the Recreation Complex will be ablaze with a spectacular display produced by Zambelli Fireworks. With their extensive experience in special effects as well as fireworks, this promises to be a show to remember!

With the flat, wide-open layout of the Recreation Complex, there is truly no bad seat in the house. The display will be shot from the rear of the park, meaning that R5, R6 & R7 will be closed off for safety; however, the rest of the park will be open. The best viewing areas will be any of the open ballfields, R1, R2 and R3.

Remote Control Car Racing

Imagine racing your favorite Winston Cup stock car on a banked oval speedway at scale speeds up to 200mph! You're in complete control as you head into the high speed banked curve, your left hand gripping the full-size steering wheel, your right hand on the shifter, your heart pounding as you go into turn 3 with the throttle wide open.~All of a sudden, it happens—the car behind you taps you from behind as he tries to nose you to the inside, sending your car spinning up the track, out of control, and into the wall as another car t-bones you when you slide in front of him. No Worries! You may be a lap down, but you're not out. Just shift into reverse and you're back in the action!

Take part in this FREE exhilarating fun at the Big Daddy’s Racing booth on the Midway all evening!
