Press Release - Boomer Day at the Park
For Immediate Release[Marker]

Seniors Take to the Field

Dateline:  September 11, 2009, Colchester, CT

On Friday, September 18, from 12:00-3:00pm, the Colchester Recreation Complex will host a special afternoon of sports and games geared toward “baby boomers”, a large and growing population in town and elsewhere.

The Colchester Senior Center and the Parks & Recreation Department are teaming up to provide lunch along with a bevy of fun and competitive activities.  This free event will include bocce, tennis, basketball and horseshoes, among other things.

The goal of “Boomer Day at the Park” is to introduce residents to the many resources available in town that can assist them in leading active, healthy lifestyles.  All census data projects a quick and significant rise in the average age of the population in the coming years and decades; in Connecticut alone, while the overall population will increase by 8.3% between 2000 and 2030, those over 65 will increase by nearly 70%, making up more than one-fifth of the community.  Certainly this growing contingent in the community will be in need of recreational opportunities that are both enriching and appropriate.

Jason Cohen, Parks & Recreation Director, is excited to bring a new audience to the park.  “I’m amazed at how often I meet people that have never been to this jewel of a park – some don’t even know it’s there.”  First time visitors to the Recreation Complex are pleasantly surprised, Cohen said. “The park has something for everyone, from active sports fields to pleasant seating areas to level walking trails, and everything in between”.

Interested participants are asked to pre-register by Wednesday, Sept. 16 by contacting either the Senior Center (537-3911) or the Parks & Recreation Office (537-7297).
