The Colchester Hayward Fire Department has quarterly volunteer recruitment drives-
February, May, August and November.

The fire department conducts four recruitment programs each year to maintain necessary emergency response capabilities.  Volunteer recruits choose between certification as a firefighter, emergency medical technician or fire police personnel.

Ever wonder how many hours of classroom it takes to become a firefighter or EMT?
At least 130 hours for an EMT student and at least 160 hours as a firefighter student. Once classroom requirements are complete, students must show proficiency in practical and written examinations to reach certification.  And this is just to start, members can progress to higher levels of training but no matter what level is attained, each member must refresh their skills annually.  So as you can see it requires a lot of time and dedication.

The membership process begins by filling out a New Member Application .  Prospective members then meet with the applicant review committee during which time a background check is done.
Responders must be physically fit to perform their duties so a medical exam is also required.  Probationary members are given a six-month period to be used as an evaluation method.

Just last weekend on a Saturday, our “New Member Orientation” class for recent applicants was held.  It was taught by company and department members who provided information on the history, organization and qualifications needed to maintain membership in the fire department.

Becoming a volunteer emergency responder calls for commitment and is not for everyone, but I encourage anyone who is interested to come to the firehouse, visit, ask questions and see for yourself what it is all about
